Functional Skills are qualifications in English, mathematics and ICT that equip learners with the practical skills needed to live, learn and work successfully and the ability to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in other real life situations. It is currently delivered by the professional tutors of Wigan Council.

Functional Skills is FREE for adults age 19+ who do not have a GCSE grade D or equivalent.

Initial Assessment

Initial and Diagnostic assessments are an important first step in working towards a Functional Skills qualification. They help us to determine that you are working at the right level so that you learn at the correct pace.

Initial Assessment appointments are held on: Wednesday, 10 am to 12 pm. Please contact the centre to arrange an appointment.

Please bring the following information with you, if possible:

  • Certificates of prior learning - especially Functional Skills
  • Identification - such as a passport, driving licence, etc.
  • Your National Insurance number
  • details for an emergency contact
