Can I take my Functional Skills exam online?
Yes. BMH Training offers remotely delivered Functional Skills Maths and English exams, allowing you to take your assessment online from a suitable location.
Do I need to take a course before booking an exam?
No. You can book an exam without purchasing a BMH Training course. However, you should make sure you are ready for the level and subject you intend to take.
How do I know whether I need Level 1 or Level 2?
If you’re unsure, you can use our free Maths or English level checker before booking. You should also confirm the level required by your employer, training provider, apprenticeship or education provider.
Are Functional Skills qualifications equivalent to GCSEs?
Functional Skills and GCSEs are different qualifications. Functional Skills Level 2 is commonly accepted as an alternative to GCSE English or Maths in many situations, but acceptance depends on the organisation or programme you are applying to.
Can I book both Maths and English?
Yes. You can book both subjects, but English components must be booked with the same awarding body. For example, if your Reading and Writing exams are with Open Awards, your Speaking, Listening and Communicating assessment should also be with Open Awards.

How does an Open Awards online exam work?
Your exam is completed remotely and an invigilator remains with you throughout the assessment. You will need a suitable device, reliable internet connection, working camera and good-quality sound.
Will an invigilator be with me during the exam?
Yes. Open Awards remote exams use live invigilation, so an invigilator will remain present during your assessment.
Do I need Microsoft Teams?
BMH Training uses Microsoft Teams for remote invigilation. You should make sure Teams works correctly on your device before your exam.
What technology do I need?
You will need a suitable computer or laptop, reliable internet connection, working camera and microphone, and the ability to use the systems required for your assessment.
TQUK Exam FAQs
Questions about TQUK self-managed online Functional Skills exams.
How does a TQUK online exam work?
TQUK exams are completed online using the TQUK assessment system. The process is more self-managed than an Open Awards exam and your invigilation is reviewed after the assessment.
Will a live invigilator stay with me during the exam?
No. Unlike the Open Awards route, a live BMH invigilator does not remain with you throughout a TQUK self-managed assessment.

Current TQUK exam options are shown on our TQUK exam page. Availability can vary by subject, level and English component.
Who is the TQUK route best suited to?
TQUK may suit candidates who are confident using online systems independently and are comfortable completing the exam without a live invigilator remaining with them throughout.

What happens after I book?
You’ll receive information about your booking and the steps you need to complete before your assessment. Make sure you read all exam communications carefully.
Should I check my technology before the exam?
Yes. You should complete the technology checks in advance rather than waiting until your exam appointment.
Can I reschedule my exam?
Rescheduling is subject to BMH Training’s booking terms and the timing of your request. Please check the current terms and conditions for the applicable rules and fees.
