Open Awards exams are supported by a live invigilator who will guide you through the examination, check that you meet the requirements and remain available if you experience any technical issues.

You receive your exam details and instructions. For Open Awards, you will receive a Microsoft Teams meeting. For TQUK, you will receive an email from @tquk.org.uk.

Sit your exam
Complete your examination online following the guidance provided.

Exam Marking
Your exams are submitted to the respective awarding body for marking.

Results
Either the centre or TQUK will let you know as soon as your result is available.

What is the difference between Open Awards and TQUK exams?
Open Awards exams have a live invigilator present throughout the examination, giving you a more supported experience. TQUK examinations use a more automated, self-managed process and are better suited to candidates who are confident using online systems independently.

Should I book Functional Skills Level 1 or Level 2?
Book the level required by your employer, university, college or training provider. Level 2 is commonly accepted as an alternative to a GCSE pass for many purposes, while Level 1 may be suitable where a Level 1 qualification is required.
Do I need to complete a course before taking the exam?
No. You can book a Functional Skills exam without completing a course first if you are ready for the assessment. If you need more preparation, you can study a Functional Skills course or use practice materials before booking.
What happens after I book my Functional Skills exam?
We will send you information explaining the next steps, including any identification, technology, exam setup and invigilation requirements. The exact process depends on the awarding body you choose.
When will I receive my Functional Skills exam result?
Result times vary depending on the awarding body, subject, level and examination component. The expected result timescale for each exam option is shown before you book.
Can I book English and Maths with different awarding bodies?
No. If you are booking more than one examination, your English and Maths exams need to be from the same awarding body. Open Awards and TQUK examinations cannot be mixed within the same booking.
